Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome ( PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome ( PCOS) is a condition that impairs ovulation and can result in the production or higher than normal amounts of androgens (male sex hormones).

For women, the hormonal imbalance makes PCOS the leading cause of infertility. In addition, PCOS can lead to other serious conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, liver and cardiovascular disease, and endometrial cancer.

Some common symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Severe acne
  • Excessive facial or body hair
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Insulin resistance
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Small cysts on ovaries
  • Infertility

This condition impacts 5-10% of women. If you display signs of these symptoms, please consult with your physician for a clear and true diagnosis.

While PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in women, it is also treatable.

Investigations

If you suspect you have PCOS, your physician will enquire about your symptoms , family history and overall health and will request appropriate bloodwork and order an ultrasound. PCOS can present itself differently in each woman and that is why a complete approach to diagnosis is important.

Treatment

The focus of PCOS treatments is to manage your specific concerns, infertility, acne, obesity, etc. Your Physician will recommend treatment which will include lifestyle changes and medications.
