Dr. Nikolett Raguz

Dr. Nikolett Raguz

MD, FRCSC

Dr. Raguz completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Calgary in 2010. Following this she completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Calgary.  She began to practice as a generalist obstetrician and gynecologist. She became interested in healthcare quality and patient safety and completed a Masters of Science in Healthcare Quality at Queen’s University. While practicing as an obstetrician gynecologist, she found herself drawn to the fertility facet of her practice and subsequently joined the Regional Fertility Program. Her clinical and research interests include general infertility, operative gynecology, patient safety and patient quality improvement.

Dr. S. C. Foong

MD, FRCSC, Medical Director

Dr. Foong completed medical training in 1997 followed by a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary. She subsequently completed a 3-year American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Mayo Clinic, USA. During this time, she was selected as one of “America’s Top Physicians 2004-2005” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. Upon returning to Canada, Dr. Foong was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology where she was on staff at the Mt. Sinai Hospital Reproductive Biology Unit. Dr. Foong returned to Calgary in 2006 where she currently practices at the Regional Fertility Program and is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Foong’s clinical and research interests include fertility preservation and premature ovarian failure. She has presented and published her research in several peer-reviewed journals and at both national and international conferences.

Dr. J. Min

MD, FRCSC, GREI

Dr. Min completed Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Psychology at the University of Calgary. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine degree with Distinction, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alberta. Following his two year fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Ottawa in 2006, he joined the Ottawa Fertility Centre as and was appointed Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa. He joined the Regional Fertility Program in 2010 and is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Min is certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is currently President of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, and is the founding Chair of its Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee. Dr. Min has been an invited speaker at both national and international meetings and conferences, and has published scholarly articles and clinical practice guidelines in peer-reviewed journals. His practice includes all areas of reproductive care, with particular interest in in vitro fertilization, male infertility and quality assurance in assisted reproduction.

Dr. B. C. Wong

MD, FRCSC, FACOG (REI)

Dr. Wong joined the Regional Fertility Program staff in August 2004 as a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary. Dr. Wong completed his MD degree at the University of Alberta in 1996. He graduated with honours in research. Following completion of his medical school, he decided to pursue specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Calgary. He received his fellowship certification in obstetrics and gynecology in 2000. He subsequently did a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Dr. Wong is an American-Board-Certified reproductive endrocrinologist and infertility specialist. He is also a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist.

Dr. Wong is the primary or contributing author of articles published in major journals such as Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecologists of Canada. His current research interests are in the area of advanced reproductive technology, embryo implantation, menopause and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Dr. N. Paterson

MD, FRCSC, GREI

Dr. Paterson joined the Regional Fertility Program after completing her fellowship in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Toronto, Mount Sinai Hospital.

She completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario and a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She then pursued a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Ottawa and subsequently completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Paterson’s clinical and research interests include advanced reproductive technology, weight and reproduction and uterine fibroids. She has been a guest speaker at national meetings and published her research in several peer-reviewed journals and at national and international conferences.

Dr. T. Gotz

Dr. Gotz obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 2010 and was the class recipient of the embryology and histology award. Following the completion of his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Alberta, Dr. Gotz completed his fellowship in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility at Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto. He is double certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in OBGYN and GREI. In addition to joining the Regional Fertility Program, Dr. Gotz is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Gotz’ areas of interest and research include optimizing IVF cycles for poor ovarian responders as well as reproductive ethics. His most recent publication, which explores ethical distribution of government funded IVF from a patient perspective, won Best Psychosocial Paper at the Canadian Fertility & Andrology Society 2017 Annual Clinical Meeting. Dr. Gotz was a speaker and an organizing committee member for the Canadian Fertility & Andrology Society’s annual reproductive ethics series for 2016 and 2017: The Gatekeeper’s Dilemma.

Regional Fertility Program – Doctor Spotlight

Dr.Min
“It sounds cliché, but I went into medicine with the desire to help people. I know I could have helped a great number of people through medical research, but for me, I wanted to devote my attention to the person in front of me.”
Dr. Min was first introduced to the idea of becoming a physician at an early age.
“I love the challenge of treating infertility and that the solution requires intellect and skilled hands.”
While working at the Ottawa Fertility Centre, Dr. Min was presented with an opportunity to move back home to Calgary and join the Calgary Regional Fertility Program (“RFP”). He jumped at the chance to join this well-established and highly-regarded practice.
In University, he studied biochemistry and psychology, but also took courses in business and law. After seriously considering Graduate school and Law school, Dr. Min focused on medicine as a chosen career, and earned a position in medical school. Initially starting in Family Medicine, Dr. Min changed his residency programs to Obstetrics and Gynecology, which paved the way for a fellowship in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
“RFP is one of the oldest IVF programs in Canada, and has consistently provided excellent success rates for our patients using well-researched, established techniques and procedures. I am privileged to be working with such a dynamic team of dedicated professionals.”
At RFP, Dr. Min sees patients in the clinic for initial consultations, diagnosis and management planning. He tries to help them understand the causes of their infertility and reproductive challenges and the treatment options they have available to them. As a Reproductive Endocrinologist and reproductive surgeon, Dr. Min offers a wide range of treatment options. In addition to IVF, he performs ovulation induction, ultrasound monitoring, IVF procedures, fertility preservation and reproductive surgery. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Min is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine. Outside RFP, Dr. Min has been involved with the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (“CFAS”) for the past 10 years. The CFAS is a non-profit professional organization representing Canadian experts in Assisted Reproductive Technologies and reproductive sciences. The mission of the CFAS is to responsibly advance reproductive science and medicine in Canada through leadership, research and guidance. Dr. Min founded and served as the Chair of the Clinical Practice Guideline committee from 2010 to 2016, and continues his involvement as a committee member. He has also sat on the Board of Directors since 2013 and was President of the Society for the 2017-2018 term.
“Through my roles at the CFAS, I have had the opportunity to engage with the federal government regarding changes to the law and the development of Health Canada regulations governing the practice of Assisted Human Reproduction in Canada. I have also been involved in developing clinical practice guidelines for many aspects of reproductive medicine, setting standards for IVF laboratories and lab professionals, and providing education to those working to deliver reproductive care. My roles at the CFAS have allowed me to fulfill my responsibilities to my colleagues and profession, and to improve the quality or reproductive care provided to all Canadians.”
In the years to come, Dr. Min sees continued movement towards making IVF stimulation safer and more patient-friendly, reducing the inconvenience of treatment. He believes there will be a move towards more non-invasive embryo evaluation techniques in order to improve success rates of embryo transfer. Dr. Min hopes that Alberta will follow the lead of Ontario and Quebec and fund IVF treatment. Dr. Min and his wife have two children and is honored to have the opportunity to try to help others have their children.
“Infertility is a disease of immeasurable suffering. I am dedicated to helping my patients navigate their fertility journey: from investigation to diagnosis and through treatment. Ultimately, I hope each and every one is successful. The best part of my job is when patients drop in to show me their children. The joy in their eyes is so compelling – the joy that children can bring.”
When not at RFP, Dr. Min can be found at home, curled up on the couch with his family and dog or outside in front of a fire, occasionally with a glass of single malt scotch – neat, of course! He will likely be listening to a rather eclectic mix of music including Groove Armada, Lady Gaga and Mumford and Sons. His guilty pleasure is 80’s rock ballads. His unique musical tastes may have arisen during his time working as a bartender in a dance club during his University days…

Dr. Gotz

“My decision to become a physician was driven by my desire to help and care for others as well as an intense curiosity and love of science.”
Dr. Gotz was fascinated with sciences from an early age and was passionate about the ways in which innovation and research could facilitate change in a positive way. It was this passion for change coupled with the complexity and challenge required to drive such change that led Dr. Gotz to the field of medicine. Reproductive endocrinology and infertility is one of the most rapidly evolving and expanding fields in medicine.

Dr. Gotz obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University where he was the class recipient of the Embryology and Histology Award. He went on to complete his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Alberta. He then pursued a fellowship in Gynecologic Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility at Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto.

Dr. Gotz grew up small rural town in northern Ontario and enjoyed skiing and camping. Calgary’s proximity to the mountains has allowed him to continue enjoying these pursuits on a much grander scale.
“My wife and I welcomed our first son while I was completing residency at the University of Alberta and we have been deeply rooted in the west ever since. Although my family immigrated to Canada when I was only a toddler, and I grew up in Ontario, I now feel like a real Albertan.”

A typical day at work features a lot of variety and challenges: a day can include technical hands-on procedures such as ultrasounds and egg retrievals among others, teaching medical students and residents, performing operations at the hospital, or the opportunity to see and counsel patients in clinic. Dr. Gotz is fortunate to see many transgender and gender-diverse patients in the scope of his practice who desire fertility preservation either prior to, during, or even once transitioned. The hormones and surgery that transgender patients are contemplating or have undergone may have consequences to their future fertility. In the past many transgender patients were not frequently counseled about fertility preservation options prior to transitioning and many had expressed regret about the lost opportunity to have biological children. There are now many treatment options to preserve fertility and increasing support for transgender patients.
“It is a privilege and a great responsibility to ensure all patients have equitable access to fertility services and have the opportunity to have children; to be involved in such emotionally complex forms of treatment, all while facilitating a smooth transition, preserving fertility making a future family our highest priority.”

Dr. Foong

Dr. Shu Foong doesn’t actually recall consciously making the decision to become a physician. There were no other physicians in her family and as such, she did not have one as a role model as a child. She was always fascinated by science and spent a lot of time volunteering in hospitals and mock-disaster training sessions during high school. It was the social interaction aspect of this that she enjoyed the most. During her undergraduate studies, Dr. Foong was accepted into medical school at the age of 19. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary followed by a 3-year American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) at the Mayo Clinic in the United States.
“My journey to becoming a REI was not a direct path. I had initially thought I would train to be a Gynecologic Oncology surgeon, a doctor who cares for patients with female cancers. However, part-way through my residency, it became clear to me the importance of my family. I felt compelled to help patients achieve their dreams of having a family, so that they too can experience the joy, love and support that I have been fortunate in having.”
The Calgary Regional Fertility Program opened its doors in 1984. Since that time, its IVF program has resulted in the successful delivery of over 15,200 babies. Dr. Foong joined the Calgary Regional Fertility Program in 2006 and currently operates as the Medical Director. Her passion and thirst for knowledge and research assist her in providing a level of care she believes is paramount.
“Infertility is a stressful condition that has the power to affect many aspects of a person’s life. Every individual has a story. We have to listen to this story and help bring it to life. My hope is to help reduce or possibly solve the stress, anxiety and suffering that comes with infertility. I am honored and humbled when patients are willing to confide in me their very personal struggles, and together, we try to tackle the problem as a team.”
The Calgary Regional Fertility Program’s high level of personal care is seen through its physicians. Dr. Foong’s standard day begins at the Clinic at 7:30 am and ends at 5:00 pm with patient care filling these hours, followed by administration and research duties into the evenings. All Calgary Regional Fertility Program physicians personally perform all IVF cycle monitoring ultrasounds, sonohysterogram and hysterosalpingogram procedures. Dr. Foong explains that this is why a patient may run into a physician at various locations in the city during their appointments. Every patient undergoing IVF treatment at the Calgary Regional Fertility Program has her cycle reviewed by a team of 2 physicians, embryologist and nurse daily. Dr. Foong works closely with the other 6 Calgary Regional Fertility Program physicians to draw on the collective experience of the entire team to review challenging cases as a “best practice approach” within the Clinic.
“I enjoy coming to work every day, as we (at the Calgary Regional Fertility Program) have a world-class team of professionals with a common goal – to help our patients achieve their dreams of a family. We believe in collaborative teamwork as the best model of care to achieve success for our patients. Every member of our team has a voice and plays an essential contribution to the goal of creating families.”
Dr. Foong is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Calgary where she teaches medical students and residents. The field of Reproductive Medicine on a whole is continually pushing the boundaries to achieve greater success for patients while reducing complications and the burden and stress of treatment. Over the next five years, Dr. Foong expects to see greater developments in the ability to individualize and simplify protocols. Dr. Foong also expects to see strides in the ability to help more patients attain their goals of having families, such as in the field of elective, oncologic and transgender fertility preservation. She has worked hard to keep Regional Fertility Program abreast with cutting-edge technology by developing the ovarian tissue freezing program in Calgary. Dr. Foong finds a balance between her passion in work with another passion: her family. On the weekends, she tries to spend as much time as possible at home with her husband and two children. “They are very supportive and tolerant of the work that I do, and so weekends are for them.” Dr. Foong opens up. “I love to bake, cook, travel and do just about anything that allows me to use my creative side.” For Dr. Foong, being at home surrounded by nature and family is very tranquil for her and allows her time to pause and reflect.
“Today, I am a mother of two wonderful children, and everyday at work, I am able to bring together both my passions through specializing in reproductive medicine and sub-specializing in fertility preservation for oncology patients. For all of this, I am truly grateful.”

Dr. O’Keane

We all look to find and fulfill a life of passion: passion in work, passion in hobbies, passion in how we fill each and every day. Ideally, we can find a profession that intermingles all of these passions. Dr. Joseph O’Keane identified and developed his passion for medicine at an early age. Interested in pursuing science, medical breakthroughs and advances, and the potential for medicine to help individuals in society, Dr. O’Keane entered medical school at the National University of Ireland immediately following completion of high school. Dr. O’Keane was among the founding Reproductive Endocrinologists of the Regional Fertility Program in Calgary. Being one of the first Clinics in Alberta and Western Canada, the Regional Fertility Program set out to provide couples struggling with infertility access to fertility testing and treatment options. Today, Dr. O’Keane specializes in the area of infertility and obstetrics and gynecology.
“The best part about being a physician is patient contact and learning more about the personal lives and interests of my patients. The most rewarding part of being an infertility specialist is the ability to fulfill our patients’ wishes to become parents, and the privilege on occasion to deliver babies of fertility patients, particularly if I had been involved in the IVF process and embryo transfer; I liken this to the journey from Genesis to Exodus.”
His passion for medicine moves well beyond the clinic walls of the Regional Fertility Program. Dr. O’Keane is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine. He served as Residency Program Director at the University of Calgary from 1998 to 2008. He was a Royal College examiner for obstetrics and gynecology from 1998 to 2004 and was a member of the Royal College Nucleus Exam Committee in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2000 to 2004. Dr. O’Keane believes teaching is an integral part of his role as a Reproductive Endocrinologist. He served as Program Director teaching young physicians in training to become specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology for over nine years. Mentoring multiple residents and guiding them in their success of chosen professions. Dr. O’Keane believes one of the greatest advances in reproductive technologies is vitrification: the ability to freeze eggs. This process has extended the potential for women to conceive later in life as well as given many younger women the ability to freeze their eggs for future use and fertility preservation.
“It is very rewarding to see women in the past whom we couldn’t help now succeeding in having families.”
The Regional Fertility Program has the ability to transfer embryos to patients up to the age of 50 years old and has seen a success rate with this technique of over 50%. In looking ahead to the future of reproductive technologies, Dr. O’Keane foresees the greatest advances to be undoubtedly in genetics and preimplantation genetic screening of embryos and the greater ability to optimize the health of offspring and prevention of fetal abnormalities.
Dr. O’Keane is not only a successful physician, he is also well-read and wide-versed in both literature and music. His heroes include Beethoven, Wagner and Mahler in music; Irish writers James Joyce and Oscar Wilde along with Russian writers Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Gogol in literature, and Socrates and Aristotle in philosophy. When not at the Clinic or on the University of Calgary campus, Dr. O’Keane can be found enjoying skiing down the slopes of the Rockies or cycling or running along Calgary’s sprawling path system.
Dr. O’Keane has delivered over 12,000 babies in his career as an obstetrician and plans to continue sharing his passion with fellow colleagues and patients alike.

Dr. Paterson

Infertility can affect anyone. There is a belief that when you are ready to begin a family, you will have a family. But, sometimes the journey to get there is not exactly how you envisioned it. Dr. Nicole (Nicki) Paterson, found her passion working in infertility during her residency rotation at the Regional Fertility Program years ago. She now continues to love her job as one of the Reproductive Endocrinologists at the clinic. Dr. Paterson recalls that during High School, she realized her love for her human physiology and therefore pursued Kinesiology, initially focusing on developing a career path in research. After her Kinesiology degree from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Paterson pursued a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of Glasgow in Scotland and was fortunate enough to receive a Commonwealth scholarship, which allowed her to collaborate on research endeavors. During her Masters, it became evident to Dr. Paterson that she was drawn to the medical field not just the field of research.
“During my Masters degree research, I realized that I really wanted more involvement in the clinical applications of health and physiology. I also realized I truly enjoyed my work that involved interaction with other people, more so than my research work provided.”
Dr. Paterson has very fond memories of Glasgow. In particular, hiking the hills of Scotland, which eventually inspired her move to Calgary. She returned to Canada to complete her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Ottawa and her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology here at the University of Calgary. During her gynecology training she realized that she had a deep appreciation for the immense effects infertility has on each patient. This realization occurred even before her own fertility challenges.
Dr. Paterson’s clinical and research interests include advanced reproductive technology and weight and reproduction. When asked what advice Dr. Paterson could give couples experiencing infertility she shared, “most of the time no one advice will be applicable or appropriate to all couples experiencing infertility…so try not to get overwhelmed with the thousands of sources of fertility advice you can experience. However, continually evaluating how you can be good to yourself, physically and emotionally will help you face the challenges involved as best you can with your health care team.” When not working at the RFP, Dr. Paterson can be found out with her family skiing, biking or traveling.
If you are ever up skiing at Kicking Horse, you may catch Dr. Paterson enjoying the slopes and having lunch at the Eagles Eye Restaurant.
“Unfortunately, the biological clock doesn’t spare infertility physicians either! After my husband and I had our son, we had multiple miscarriages and subsequent infertility. I have my devoted coworkers and colleagues from the Regional Fertility Program (RFP) to thank for our recent addition to our family.”
The Calgary RFP provides comprehensive fertility care, not just IVF, as all of the Physicians are Reproductive Endocrinologists and can provide investigations for cause, and also multiple options for fertility treatments when appropriate. Reproductive Endocrinology is an exciting, quickly advancing field of medicine. Dr. Paterson states:
“I love that you actually see and can manipulate human physiology to potentially achieve such monumental and magnificent outcomes for patients.
